Merchant card fees – Comparison USA & Sweden

Card fees is a hot topic and it’s interesting to compare the US (the largest market) fees with the fees in Sweden, the top country for paying with cards . EU has now ruled the interchange fees (the fee between aquiring and issuing party’s) and they now have a ceiling of 0,2% for debit cards and 0,3% for credit cards.

The average a merchant in Sweden pays today is 1,5 SEK for a purchase with debit card and 1,5 SEK + 1,7% for a credit card purchase.

The average fees for merchants in USA 2014 as of a study by The Nilson Report are;

Visa/MasterCard credit 2.15%
American Express 2,48%
Visa/MasterCard debet 0,75%
PIN debet 0,67%
Private label 1,13%
Discover 1,89%
Total 1,51%
