Rumours says that PKO Bank Polski, the largest bank in Poland, has reached over 20 000 users with its IKO mobile payment service, and this only a few weeks after launch and without any heavy marketing.
Compared with some mobile banking and mobile money transfer services the figure may sound low, but remember that this is a “real” mobile money service that covers all payment situations and more. Besides POS, online and P2P, also ATM cash withdrawal using mobile instead of card and mobile money vouchers.
I been following adoption for many pilots and the very few commercial launches for some years, and I have not heard this kind of numbers in Europe before. It will be interesting to follow PKO, especially when they will do more marketing. I think PKO is doing this the right way though they also think about the payment eco-system and for example include 65 000+ POS-terminals and over 3 000 ATMs in the rollout of IKO.
